high-res-2Have you seen the race kit that Bryn Dickenson has been wearing at this year’s World Cups? It’s the “sick” one, that’s black, white and has a rad looking yellow logo on it. I can’t quite figure out what it is but it’s definitely badass. It certainly gets you intrigued and wanting to know more about how you can get your hot little bodies into it!

Well, the brand is called RED Clothing, a New Zealand company based in the Wellington region that has been running for under a year and is already turning some heads with their take on mountain bike clothing. You may have already seen their “No Dig No Ride?”t-shirt, and with a statement like that you know they are all about the sport we love!

angela-calkin-goeres-7To find out more about this exciting new brand I grabbed a beer with the head of RED to have a quick chat and to find out what they are up to.

Chainslap: Who are you and what’s your role at RED?
RED: My name is Luka Goeres, I basically am RED Clothing. So I design and run the company by myself at the moment.

Riding is pretty important to you, it’s in your name, how did you come up with it?
I actually came up with the original idea and name way back in year 11 for a design project. Then, later on, I just kind of decided to give it a shot and try to get it started!

Tell us about the logo. It really draws you in and makes you look closer at your clothing.
Well, I came up with the name RED (Ride Every Day), so I was just kind of playing around with what I could make out of the word. Eventually, I just tried something super simple and just chucked two R’s up against each other and voila, there it was!

What sort of riding gets you fired up?
Personally, I started with downhill and freeride, and that still continues to be what gets me fired up, but I’ve been doing a lot more trail riding over the past year and a half and I’m loving it.

I saw a web edit the other day and the rider was wearing one of your jerseys, that’s pretty cool! Your brand is getting out there…
Yeah man, considering I’m a full-time student who’s also working part time I’m pretty happy with the speed at which the brand is growing. Hopefully, I can give it a good boost over the summer.

What made you want to get into clothing?
Well, I’ve always been into design and I’ve also loved bikes and the outdoors my whole life. So for me, it was a matter of combining the two and chasing the dream of doing what I love for a career.

Do you do your designs?
Yup, I do the designs.

What inspired you?
Honestly, I think I just design what I think looks sick, and then refine it until everyone else agrees that it looks sick! Basically, if people can get stoked on my designs, I’m a happy dude.

It’s rad you sponsor Bryn Dickerson, what’s his involvement with RED?
Yeah loving the partnership with Bryn for sure! So while he’s been overseas he’s been trying out new gear that we’ve got in the works, and helping us out with the development of products. The information he gives us is invaluable to refining our products as he’s riding at the top level and pushing the gear to its limits.

He had a great season this year in the world cups, you must be stoked on his results?
His results have been great to watch! He’s consistently getting better and I couldn’t be more stoked for him.

Have you two known each other for long?
We actually met early this year at an event in Wellington and he approached me afterward and proposed a possible opportunity to work together, haven’t looked back since!

You’re sponsoring the Wellington Mountain Bike downhill series. Getting involved in the grass roots must be important to you?
The Welly Downhill series is just such a cool series to be a part of, everyone is super chilled and there’s good banter all day long. Even Bryn was saying he reckons it’s the best local downhill series in the country that he’s seen. The vibe of these events is a big part of what RED embodies.

I see Bryn was at the first event that’s pretty cool to have someone of that level at a local event.
Yeah, it’s kind of unreal for sure. It’s not every day you get one of the top 50 downhill riders in the world coming up behind you during practice at your local trail! And yeah I race in them as well, can’t resist getting amongst the action!

Any other events in the pipeline?
Ahh nothing definite at the moment, although I am planning on sponsoring more events over the summer, possibly even running my own event. You’ll hear about any events we’re a part of through our social media pages.

Are you trading solely online? Any plans to get your product into bike shops?
At the moment we’re only online. When we bring out our new line this summer I’m going to try and get them in bike shops across the country (so if you own or work at a bike shop, hook me up!).

Thanks for your time Luka, where can people buy your gear? Where can they get you on? Facebook, Instagram, website etc.
We’ve got an online store on our website, at www.rideeveryday.nz
We’ve also got a store running on our Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/rideeverydayclothing.
