Surfing is a rite of passage in Australia, and growing up near the beach as 90% of Aussies do, I floundered around in the breakers a bit, but didn’t have the same dexterity as I did on a bike, so a short-lived stint it was. The Aussies have laid claim to numerous World titles by myriad surfers, and in the 70s they pioneered the twin fin and thruster (triple fin) concepts. One of my early heroes was my hometown Newy boy, three-time World Champ Mark Richards. Winning world titles doesn’t put you on the map though; getting your own Tooheys Draught TV ad does that.
