Designing products that are more Steve McQueen than Captain Kirk has been a recurring trend in cycling the past few months. Merino wool has been making a steady march to the forefront, Giro (and now Specialized, Bontrager etc) were the first big company to release performance cycling shoes with laces, and the Omata One, an analog GPS-based speedometer was announced to great fanfare earlier this year.

The Omata One: spot a trend?

Garmin-Vivomove-colorsIn their footsteps, the Garmin Vivomove was released this week; the first analog watch from fitness specialists Garmin with an integrated activity tracker à la Fitbit. As with most activity trackers, there’s an app (of course) to measure your steps etc. This app of course reminds you to move when your desk-bound job has you pounding the keyboard instead of the pavement ten hours a day, tells you how many calories you’ve burnt by choosing sushi instead of pizza, and allows you to sync your other activities that Garmin also tracks for you.

It comes in a very handsome black dial with a black leather band (yes, there are other colours too), which will match your dresses or suits just fine. The Vivomove is far more subtle than the ever-expanding Fitbits though, so you might have to try pretty hard to impress your date with how active you’ve been by not taking an Uber to the bar.
