*The Best Song Ever Written is a series of songs that aren’t necessarily THE best (as that’s subjective anyway), but a collection of great songs that have significance to me, have made an impact on my life, remind me of moments of life, or just plain rock.

First up in our new series is a song that could be considered a one-hit-wonder, from British band SpaceHog. In The Meantime is instantly recognisable for those of us around in the 90s, and while I always thought it was a great song I never explored SpaceHog’s music further. Last week it came back into my life as if by some divine intervention through tragedy. Our dog Remi left us way too soon, and after sending him off to God’s kennel, this song was the first thing I heard as he made his last van ride. I’d never deciphered the lyrics beyond the chorus, and upon reading them we knew this was the perfect song to honour and remember him by. RIP you stinky-breathed, garbage-eating, camping-cat companion, we all miss you.

Marvel at the skill of Royston Langdon who plays an intricately beautiful bassline while singing totally off kilter to what he’s playing. It’s no small feat, and cements this gem as a worthy first entry to TBSEW.
