Outskirts: Route 66

If you’ve had the pleasure of watching any of the Thereabouts films, you’ll know the inspiration for what makes them tick; getting out on the bike with good friends, amplified by crazy massive distances, in places that seem less than ideal or even hospitable for cycling.

Outskirts takes Gus Morton’s latest crew across America on the famed Route 66, sometimes next to it and other times nowhere near it. As with the previous trips, it borders on insanity and the nigh impossible, punctuated by moments of beauty, despair, wonder and bafflement. Probably the best made yet, it’ll make you want to get out of your own comfort zone, but maybe not as far as this.

I wanted to like this… but it’s just not that entertaining. Travelling by bicycle with a support vehicle, complaining, lavish dining and new kit everyday. It sums up for me as portraying ‘backroad’ America as populated by Christian kooky preachers, chauvinistic rednecks and mentally unstable wanderers. Where’s the adventure and fun endless hours in the saddle cranking out good times?

I suppose there are different adventures done in different ways, and this is just one example. I found it entertaining, and the characters along the way need to be a bit different; what would be the point of a stay-at-home mum who doesn’t leave the tv, or an office worker who goes to the bar after work being interviewed? For me, it seemed like they were having good times and the usual hardships that come with riding long distances, ‘supported’ or not. Thanks for commenting, conversation is good! Cheers.
